For the first time in the history of QDSA’s Collaborative Research Grant (CRG) Program, QDSA hosted a Briefing and Networking evening on Thursday 22 August to facilitate researcher and industry partner connections and collaboration for QDSA CRG Expression of Interest (EOI) proposals.
As the name suggests, collaboration is key for these Grants. In fact, all submissions must be led by a QDSA Member University (more on that later).
Below you’ll find information on the Program, along with Frequently Asked Questions discussed during the briefing and networking event.

2024 QDSA CRG Briefing and Networking Evening Recap
More than 50 attendees from QDSA member universities, other research institutions, SMEs and Primes gathered for the inaugural Briefing and Networking evening in Brisbane.
QDSA’s Director, Stu Blackwell, and Associate Director, Dr Roger Stuckey, shared insights into the 2024 CRG process and what the criteria the review panel is looking for in successful proposals.
The floor was then opened to the audience who pitched their organisation’s capability and areas of interest.
It was a great evening, and it was encouraging to see the enthusiasm and energy in the room as new connections were formed.
QDSA is looking forward to seeing how the potential partnerships formed during this event translate into a stronger calibre in the 2024 round of CRG proposals.
CRG EOI proposal FAQs
Collaboration FAQs
Do I need to collaborate with more than one university?
No, but the nature of the grants is to collaborate so those who do will score better in the evaluation.
Do I need to collaborate with an industry partner?
No, but the nature of the grants is to collaborate so those who do will score better in the evaluation.
Do you require detailed information on industry partners?
No, this is desirable but not essential.
Can non-member universities participate?
Yes, however, teams must have a member university (Charles Darwin University, Griffith University, James Cook University, University of Queensland) lead the project.
I’m interested in participating but I’m not part of a team.
Contact info@qdsa.au with details about your expertise relevant areas of interest and our team will endeavour to make an introduction for you with a researcher and/or industry partner who may be open to collaborating on a project.
Funding FAQs
Does QDSA have a stake in IP?
No, the IP arrangements are established between the collaborating applicants only. We highly recommend IP agreements take place prior to the submission of the EOI.
How many projects will be funded?
QDSA will fund as many projects as possible at the time of the detailed proposal stage.
Do I need to ask for the full $250,000?
No. We encourage you to request the amount that your project genuinely requires, whether it’s $50,000 or $250, 000, as this will allow us to consider and potentially fund as many projects as possible.
However, if your project requires the full amount to achieve its objectives, we recommend you do so.
Do I need to make a co-contribution?
No, however proposals with co-contributions will score better in the evaluation.
Do budget items need to include GST?
If you have to pay GST on these items, please indicate this.
Project information FAQs
What does direct benefit to Queensland mean?
The proposed team must have a presence in Queensland to receive up to $250,000. This may be an industry partner or a member university based in Queensland.
What if I’m interested in a topic that is not listed?
Other topics outside those listed may be considered but they will need to have an alignment to the 2024 National DefenceStrategy, 2024 Integrated Investment Program and be of interest to Queensland.
Does my project have to start at TRL 3?
No, QDSA will review all projects. However, TRL 3-7 is where QDSA is focussed on supporting to provide the most benefit to Defence. Projects around TRL3 will score better in the evaluation.
What is the word count for project description?
150 words maximum is a guide, please endeavour to keep within this.
How much detail do you require in section 2?
One paragraph for each subsection is fine. Diagrams are welcome too.
